"I'm counting on you all! You better bring a fucking riptide when I call!" -Captain Lizzie, to the Riptide Pirates.

Elizabeth Lafayette, better known as Captain Lizzie, is the captain of the Crescent Moon, a former Midnight Rose crew member and a sister figure of Chip. As an NPC, she is played by Grizzlyplays, aka Grizzly.

Description

Elizabeth Lafayette, or "Lizzie" as most know her by, is a dark skinned human woman with dark brown locs bedazzled with golden hair cuffs and pulled into a messy bun. The front of her hair is held back by a folded red bandana. She has one bluish-grey eye and the other is covered with an eyepatch that has a gold skull-and-crossbones on it. Up her left arm is the tattoo of a pink wave, and up her right arm is an amalgamation of birds flying upwards. She wears a thick, gold necklace around her neck, possesses stud and industrial ear piercings, and has a golden nose ring. Lizzie wears a cropped red tank top with an oversized black captain's-coat overtop of it lined with red fabric on the interior and fringed with gold. As well as that, the coat is also adorned with golden spiked pauldrons and buttons with rose patterns on them. She wears fraying gray pin-striped pants (similar to Chip's in his original design) that are held up with a studded belt and several golden wallet chains. Lastly, she has black leather boots that come up to her knees and have gold soles and accents.

Lizzie has had three redesigns in total, the first being her original appearance in Episode 31: One Remaining Rose, the second being in Episode 101: Daughter of Violence, and the third being her final design by OrganBean that has not been featured in any episode as of yet.

Lizzie is the current pirate captain of her own crew known as The Grandberry Pirates, consisting of Caspian, Marshall John, Rudith, and presumably multiple other unnamed members. Elizabeth spoke of another pirate having been apart of the crew before Caspian joined, but it's implied that they had died before his arrival. She and her crew are frequent visitors of Joaldo Island and participants in the island's Paramount Tournament, in which Chip and her reunited for the first time in a decade since the sinking of the Black Rose Pirates' ship.

Background/History

Lizzie was a young girl on the Midnight Rose ship of the Black Rose Pirates, a famous crew of pirates consisting of their Captain, Arlin James, Drey Ferin and Finn Tidestrider.

She spent part of her childhood on the ship along with the other crew members and Chip, who had been taken in by Arlin. Here they spent most of their time on the sea, engaging in hotdog eating battles and traveling over the oceans, up until the ship's final sail. They sailed one last time as the captain prepared to settle down with his wife, though unbeknownst to them this last trip would end in a disaster.

After an attack by a kraken and a group of humanoid sludge monsters, the ship went down and the Captain, Finn, Drey and Arlin were lost in a swirling whirlpool. Other crew members vanished at sea as well, and to Lizzie's knowledge so was Chip as she washed up on the shore of a deserted island alone. The only other survivor with her being Chey, the ship's chef, who unfortunately succumbed to old age and the harshness of the island some time after. Elizabeth survived just barely on the lonesome island until she managed to escape off it. After Chey’s death, Lizzie was picked up by Captain Shadowbeard and fought alongside him; this is where she met Caspian. Their crew butted heads with the Navy often, and Lizzie specifically noticed Ava Ferin as the two were the same age. The two started hanging out outside of battle, originally for a one-on-one, but evolved into something deeper.

Lizzie trusted Ava enough to bring her to Shadowbeard’s hideout, which sparked a battle. During the confrontation between Shadowbeard’s crew and RAFT, Ava killed Shadowbeard, and Lizzie watched as RAFT soldiers caught Ava in the crossfire. Caspian helped Lizzie to escape the fight, and Lizzie has held the guilt ever since.

After forming the Grandberry Pirates, she and her new crew traveled often and eventually made it to raid a Navy-occupied city, where she met Marshall John, who at this time was a Navy official still loyal to his army. They fought and she managed to beat the Marshall and his squad into retreat and she gave an inspiring speech, which became John's motivation for leaving the Navy. He searched for her in order to join her crew as she inspired him so greatly, with help of the Albatrio.

Up until her reunion with Chip, Lizzie's animosity for the Navy grew more as their control began to spread further across the lands of Mana. She watched as one of the pirate lords appointed to balance the power between the Navy and pirates was killed by them without warning, and she watched as the Navy continuously invaded outlaw land. The crew member who had died may have also been killed by Navy, as in Episode 11: Return to the Open Sea when the wanted posters of her were first shown, the drawing of a man named Daeger was printed beside her image for a comparable sum of money.

Because of these factors, Lizzie began to try and rally together a war effort against the Navy to take back the power they were using for corruption. She and her crew participated in the Paramount Tournament to try and find strong pirates that could fight, though they may have not been entirely successful until meeting The Albatrio.

After the attack by the Navy on Joaldo, seeing that Marshall John had been arrested, she made it her mission to rescue him. However this was hindered by an encounter with Jayson Ferin on the seas, resulting in him cutting their ship in half and having to dock at All-Port early to have it repaired.

After Marshall John's rescue, she met up with the Riptide Pirates at All-Port. She introduced Chip to Roofus, who was a member of the Black Rose Pirates. While Chip and Ollie stayed behind, she took Jay to The Porthole to "have a conversation", but stating she "had to be a little drunk" to do so. The two got drunk together, where they shared stories and honest feelings. Here, Lizzie revealed that she knows of Jay's sister, having mistook Jay for her on Joaldo. Lizzie ends up passing out from her alcohol intake.

After a number of days at All-Port and having had her ship fixed, she tells the Albatrio she is to depart with her crew in order to rally more people for her war effort against the Navy. As they left on their respective ships in Episode 63: Farewells, Lizzie mouthed to Jay, "And don't die."

Chip

(Notes) Little brother figure. Refers to him as a "little guppy" to Jay while drunk.

Marshall John

Caspian

Ava Ferin

Lizzie and Ava have a tumultuous history. In Episode 101: Daughter of Violence, Lizzie tells Chip that she and Ava had a “rivalry” where they each “played their roles” in fights between RAFT and the pirates. The two met privately to have a one-on-one to settle their scores, however this became more of a normal occurrence. The two often hung out in secret, with Lizzie saying Ava made her feel “like a person”.

Lizzie trusted Ava enough to bring her to her crew’s hideout.

Lizzie was present at Ava’s death, and she still holds the guilt to this day, being unable to look at Jay because of the sisters’ similarity. During Jay confrontation of Lizzie at the end of Episode 101, Lizzie says she could never tell Jay over drinks that she “saw her die, and you know what, I also fucking loved her!” This implies the two had a far deeper connection than just a rivalry, and explains why Lizzie is so torn up about Jayson blaming her for his daughter’s death. She believes she “might as well” have killed her, as she is the one who brought Ava into the hideout which led to her death.

(Notes) Rocky start, eventual friendship forged on eventual trust.

Trivia

  • Lizzie is canonically LGBT. Grizzly has confirmed that she is either a lesbian or bi, and is unsure of her sexuality, though notes that romantic and sexual attraction are "back of her mind presently".[1]
  • Lizzie's age is confirmed by Grizzly in his discord.[2]
  • Lizzie's birthday is the Hellis 23rd, 1489[3]
  • Lizzie's appearance may have been partially retconned. In the original one-shot, "The Hole in the Sea", Elizabeth is described as having blonde hair, but she is later described as having dark brown hair when the Riptide Pirates meet her on Joaldo Island during the Paramount tournament.[4]
