"It seems fate has brought you before death. I will grant you this moment to pray to your gods, before I saturate the soil in your blood." -Thanatos

Description

Appearance

Thanatos, or his adopted name Thaddeus, is a Warforged man with black steel plating, large blue eyes, big horns and two tubes attaching to the sides of his head. His chin is a slightly different shade of grey, and he wields a double-bladed scimitar. Thanatos wears a dark, earthy blue sash that drapes around his neck, forming a hood that covers a Spartan-Esque champions helmet. The space within the helmet is completely black, save for the white light of his eyes and a blue outline surrounding it. His sash falls into a cape that bears the Dawnguard insignia; the sigil of a man bearing a sword skyward, encompassed by the sun. Beneath the cloak, he wears a jet-black bodysuit that is covered by white steel plate armor.

Personality

Cold, stoic, ruthless and brutal, but can have moments of kindness towards his friends.

Background/History

Adopted into the Holy Family when he was three years old, Thanatos had originally been built as a god-hunter, named "Project Thanatos". He and his creator were discovered by Durian; high priest and father of the Holy Family, and he was spared to be taken under Durian's watch. From then on, Thanatos was renamed Thaddeus and was trained as one of the Dawnguard, to fight underneath the gods. His memory of his past creator and purpose was lost, and he lived with the Holy Family for roughly 20 years.

One day though, after reluctantly agreeing to go through their father's room, he and his brother Amyr discovered a hidden room. This room contained a spare version of Thanatos, and he was hit with a memory of his past life. Enraged, Thanatos left the home towards the cathedral his father worked in, rolling the head of the fake warforged at his father's feet.

After a brief argument, his father challenged him to a duel. While Durian put up a fight, the battle ended with his head on the podium of the church, Thanatos bathed in red light from the sun while his father was bathed in blue from the stained glass mural.

Since the vanishing of the sky, Thanatos spent his months searching for the Gods and ways to fulfill his goal, pushing down whoever stood in his way. He had no mercy for those who stood against him, regardless of who they were. One night, he had traveled through the forests of a small town, eliciting suspicions from hunters who were sent off to deal with him. Before they could confront him, Thanatos created a large arena made from wooden logs, presumably to fight Julius Swiftwalker who had become a Great Blight. He was attacked unprovoked by one hunter, who he killed. The other hunter rushed back, and this escape lead duo Rumi and Peter Sqloint to his arena.

While Thanatos attacked them after sensing bits of holiness within them, Rumi and Peter were eventually able to calm him down enough to convince him to let them join his journey.

Relationships

Peter Sqloint

Thanatos and Peter are unlikely friends. While their start was rocky, and Peter remained quite afraid of him for some time, and Thanatos quite dismissive and threatening towards Peter on the other hand, they became nothing short of close upon traveling together, alongside Rumi.

Peter is one of if not the only people that Thanatos has ever been kind to in any sense of the word. He feels some need to protect Peter, at the least, coming to his defense against a bidet in the bathroom of a tavern readily... He additionally objects to Peter being insulted and reacts violently to harm and insult done to Peter. Like Rumi, though perhaps more surprisingly, Thanatos has on multiple occasions reiterated Peter's strength and worth to him. Though, contrary to Rumi, he has also attributed a majority of Peter's power to Exandroth, acknowledging that the angel is the real brawn behind him, even if chaotic. Regardless, it's clear that Peter acts like somewhat of a buffer between Thanatos and raw impulse. While Peter was scared and remains naturally intimidated by Thanatos, he considers him a best friend and even kept painted rocks that looked like him -- one themed red, for his "evil" look, and one themed blue, with a smile painted on as well. It seems that Peter truly believes there is a "good" or empathetic side to Thanatos, which is somewhat fair to at least assume, given how Thanatos treats Peter in comparison to everyone else.

Thanatos has not only gifted Peter with a rock simply for the sake of doing something nice (something Thanatos does not do), but he is also the only person Thanatos has apologized to.
